Research in AMCs vs Community Hospitals – Navigating Similar Objectives in Settings with Different Cultures and Priorities

Although research is regularly conducted in both academic medical centers (AMCs) and community hospital settings, there are notable differences in the priority and approach due to the mission, structure, and size of each entity. AMCs are often extremely large enterprises with multifaceted priorities in research, education and patient care, and where significant resources are assigned to patient tertiary care. In contrast, community hospitals, with a mission focus on patient care, view research from the context of how it elevates/extends patient care. These differences play out in how clinical trials are viewed, negotiated, administered and executed within the two groups.
