WIRB-Copernicus Group Experts Selected as Advice Columnists for the Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics
PRINCETON, N.J., Jan. 15, 2015 – The WIRB-Copernicus Group (WCG), the world’s largest provider of regulatory and ethical review services and software to support clinical research, announced today that Jeffrey A. Cooper, MD, MMM, its vice president of global consulting, and Lindsay McNair, MD, MPH, MSB, its chief medical officer and president of consulting services, are serving as advice columnists for the Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics (JERHRE) under the banner “The Practical Ethicist.”
Drs. Cooper and McNair address sensitive and important topics in their column, such as whether an institutional review board (IRB) has the authority to ban non-compliant investigators from conducting clinical research, or to order data to be destroyed, and provide well-considered, practical responses.
“Institutions and IRBs encounter situations where investigators legitimately require behavioral changes before conducting future research,” said Drs. Cooper and McNair. “Although institutions can delegate this authority to the IRB, this is a role better assigned to management. Whereas the IRB’s role is to protect subjects and oversee research, management’s role is to oversee people and their behavior.”
