Owen Garrick, MD, MBA

Biography

Dr. Garrick was dean of clinical trials at Mayo Clinic. He led the transformation of Mayo Clinic’s clinical trials and an ambitious strategy to bring the promise of clinical trials to more patients. This included developing digital capabilities, accelerating the volume of remote clinical trials, and enhancing national awareness of clinical trials at Mayo. He had oversight of 2,500+ clinical trials which have enrolled over 50,000 patients. He was also responsible for developing alliances with industry, academia, and government. He has been a member of the Genentech External Council for Advancing Inclusive Research since its inception.

Prior to Mayo Clinic, he was chief medical officer of Clinical Trial Services at CVS Health. Under his leadership, CVS Health enrolled more than 3,600 participants into U.S. clinical trials, representing 5% of all study participants in the country. Dr. Garrick executed medical strategy for the Trial Deliver, Recruitment, and Real-World Evidence business lines, ensuring compliance, clinical insights, and clinical innovation. He oversaw the development of machine-learning models for patient identification and outreach, leveraging in-home, digital, and retail pharmacy care delivery for research and evidence generation.

Dr. Garrick is a nationally recognized leader in the field of research and research ethics. He is the 2021 winner of the American Society of Health Economists’ Willard G. Manning Memorial Award for the Best Research in Health Econometrics. He was confirmed and completed a term in the Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Council on Human Research Protections from 2012 – 2016. He has co-authored industry advisory documents around biospecimen data security and patient engagement in research and served on the board of Professional Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIMR).

Dr. Garrick earned his MD from Yale School of Medicine and his MBA from Wharton School of Business. He holds an AB in Psychology from Princeton University.
